Russia’s Complicated War

As Russia’s attempt to take over Ukraine becomes more complicated, it has been reported that President Vladimir Putin will be rallying more troops. The invasion of Ukraine does not seem to be going as planned for Russia, since during the initial days, many expected a clean sweep. This could not be any further from the truth as Ukraine has held its ground quite admirably.
Reacting to Putin’s announcement, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba stated that more men will be put into peril. He went on to add that Putin is disrespecting several countries across the globe including China, together with a host of others who have asked for an end to the war. He sniped at him by saying that more men are being rallied simply because he has no chance of winning.

The fact that Russia is expected to call three hundred thousand reservists serves as a strong indication that the war is not as straightforward as Putin’s military thought. Many reported that Putin planned to dominate Ukraine within just a few days. Months later and Ukraine is still holding its own. The ramifications and impacts of these additional troops is still yet to be seen however from what we have so far, Russian soldiers were poorly equipped and lacked motivation.
Ukrainian soldiers have displayed a ferocity like no other when defending their country. Ukraine has benefited from the support of other countries, such as the United States and United Kingdom. This level of support and reaction from Ukraine might prompt Putin to retreat and cease this conflict. This latest move of summoning more troops might be a last-ditch attempt to turn around a war that has gone wrong. Some argue that this is a similar mistake like when Putin decided to attack in the first place.
Reports highlight that Putin is considering holding referendums in locations occupied by Russia so that different areas of Ukraine can become a part of it. This was met with several disapprovals, with many questioning the validity of such referendums and their legal standings.
The consequences of this war will last for the long-term. The population of Ukraine is expected to face poverty and vulnerabilities for years to come following this carnage.
