A Healthy Brain

Mental health has come under even greater attention following the months of the COVID-19 pandemic. It has made us more aware about the importance of taking care of our mental health. Now that the pandemic has subsided, it is necessary that we continue to give mental health the priority it deserves. In this article, we shall be discussing some tips on how to maintain a healthy brain.

A good diet

Nutrition is essential for a healthy brain. In this day and age, there are multiple food options, however we cannot say that all these are healthy or good for us. The benefits of healthy food are endless and together with keeping your weight and body in check, it also helps to optimise the brain. Bad food choices will impact the brain, leading to fatigue and less proper decision making.

Exercise

Exercising regularly will help blood flow towards the brain. It also brings about better moods due to the release of endorphins. Exercise combats stress which can kill brain cells and hence impact its overall health.

Good sleep

For the brain to function properly, sleep is of paramount importance. Being the most complex function of the body, it oversees that the other organs are working in an appropriate manner, even during sleep.

Music

Music lovers will enjoy hearing this. Research shows that listening to music positively impacts the brain.

Meditation

Life has become incredibly hectic and fast-paced. Considering this, meditation is still not yet as popular as it should be. With the limited time available and people ending up watching content in front of screens, meditation is pushed to the side. Integrating meditation will have long-term benefits such as preventing the brain from ageing. It will also help fight stress which is detrimental for the brain. With meditation, we can live more peaceful lives and extend the longevity of the brain.

Don’t smoke

Smoking brings to the fore several ailments which can be fatal in the long-term. When one smokes, the risks of dementia increase. This is also the case when it comes to second hand smoking.

Mental exercise

We typically associate exercise with the physical aspect only. There are different ways to exercise the brain and keep it sharp. Some activities in this regard include reading, solving puzzles such as sudoku or playing an instrument, just to name a few.

Invest in yourself by doing all you can to keep your most important organ healthy. Considering its importance, we tend to overlook the brain’s health.
