Changing jobs for better prospects is very common nowadays. In an economy where there are several opportunities to explore, keeping a job for the longer stretch is not appealing for many. In this article, we shall be discussing things you should consider before resigning. It is one thing when opting to resign for strategic purposes rather than an impulse. In this regard, it is important not to give in your resignation due to an abrupt moment of anger caused by your boss, colleagues or clients. Making rash and quick decisions can be destructive for your career.

Make the reasons for your move clear in your head

It is important that you have valid reasons for the resignation. These can include a jump towards a better paying job, a company that offers improved career progression opportunities or simply to move away from a toxic working environment. Although you may have valid reasons to leave a place of work, timing is of paramount importance.

Timing

You may have very valid reasons to leave your place of employment, but do you have a solid opportunity to jump at? Leaving your job without having a replacement can be classified as bad timing, especially if you do not have a healthy amount of savings and need to cater for monthly commitments. You may have a good opportunity as an option however personal commitments might make the timing less than ideal.

Seek feedback

A job move is a life changing decision. Being in your position, you would obviously have some bias so obtaining feedback from someone external yet is a trusted source can provide you with insights which you may have missed. The person that you speak to should ideally have experience in the workplace and can provide you with value added opinions.

The advantages that the opportunity offers

There are several things that you need to mull before you take the ultimate decision of quitting your job. Does the job you are going for offer a competitive and market rate salary? Are the expectations surrounding the role realistic when compared to the compensation? What is the employee turnover rate and how does it fare when compared to the market? What are the company’s financials and for how long has it been in operation? These are all questions that you need to address so as to better understand the benefits that the company offers.
