5 Ways you can be more optimistic

Optimism is healthy. Although it may be difficult to adopt an optimistic outlook, it will make quite a difference to the way you approach life. In this article, we shall be discussing some ways to keep yourself optimistic. This can be challenging at first, especially if you adopt a gloom and doom approach at perceiving things.

Define optimism in a realistic way

To properly define optimism, one must not confuse this with happiness. Being optimistic does not mean that one discards life’s challenges and ignore their existence. Although happiness can indeed lead to optimism, it is much easier to have an optimistic outlook. The two are different and must be treated as such. This means that optimism does not translate into excessive joy, instead it focuses on the belief of positive outcomes, even when things are turbulent.

Focussing on what you can control

Thinking about things that you have no control over will have no positive impact. Whilst it is sometimes inevitable to think about the past and what may have been, this is something you cannot change. Adopting such approaches does not conform with an optimistic outlook. Psychologists recommend that you would not overwhelm yourself with the past and future but remain present in the moment. This allows one to stay focused on the positive as you are not considering unknown facts.

Me time

Allocate the time for some quality “me time”. Even if it is for just a few minutes a week, enjoy a long bath, read a book, exercise or watch your favourite show. The objective of this is to engage in activities that provide relaxation and enjoyment.

Be grateful

One of the reasons why people delve into the rut of pessimism is because they do not appreciate what they have. Appreciating the small things in life and what you have already achieved is of paramount importance. Keeping a journal to document these can help you. You may also consider starting or ending your day by listing three things or people that you are grateful for. This allows you to emphasise on the positive sides of life.

Dilute negative thoughts

Pessimism is spearheaded by negative thoughts. Seeing the bright side in negative episodes and thoughts is an art. Seeing the bad side of a job where you have a lot of work to do? You may see the positive side, that you are being entrusted with responsibilities which may translate into career growth.
