How do you build trust in a relationship?

Trust can be defined as one of the main pillars in any relationship. It takes time and effort to build and in certain cases, re-build. Trust in itself leads to peace of mind and in this article, we shall discuss how to establish it within a relationship.
Honesty

The lack of honesty can permanently damage the foundations of any relationship. There are those who would manage to trust during the early stages in a relationship, however there are others who would need time to test their partner and this would require honest interactions. All relationships face strain and most will make mistakes. The mistakes made in relationships may include dishonesty. When this happens, it is important to acknowledge the mistake and improve behaviour going forward, in an attempt to repair the damage.
Vulnerability

Establishing trust may be difficult without allowing yourself to be vulnerable with your partner. When people refuse to open up with their partners, they establish a barrier which makes it difficult to be truthful when faced with sensitive issues. When you allow yourself to be vulnerable, it can lead to more openness and a better relationship, although it can be intimidating! With that said, one cannot force their partner to express vulnerability. Some people just do not feel comfortable expressing something which distresses them.
Respect

This is another essential component within a well-functioning relationship. When respect is sound, partners within the relationship seek fair outcomes through reasonable compromise. It is likely that manipulation tactics to achieve individual outcomes are avoided.
Risking it together

When partners take risks together, this can help to develop the relationship through better trust. This enables both parties to share fears and concerns, thus creating a better understanding of where support is required.
Empathy

Another way to build trust in a relationship is through empathy. When you are capable of demonstrating that you can put yourself in the shoes of your partner, trust automatically ensues. Empathy requires maturity and a commitment towards teamwork and mutual benefit.
Relationships and trust have become all the more complicated in recent times. Long-term relationships are now less common, together with the fact that we seem to have little time for anything. This difficult and very busy lifestyle can make it hard to place trust in your relationship as a priority, however, failure to do so might mean the end of it.
