Donald Trump COVID-19 Medication. To be made free for all?

Ever since the United States President Donald Trump has tested positive for COVID-19, he has received treatment via various drugs, as indicated by his doctors. It is still not yet established where Donald Trump contracted the virus.

The potential repercussions of the virus can be spearheaded by two scenarios, one where the virus is the problem and secondly when the immune system goes haywire, causing damage to other organs within the body.

The drugs which scientists are working on include those that attack the virus and others that calm the immune system.

Vials of the drug Remdesivir lie during a press conference about the start of a study with the Ebola drug Remdesivir in particularly severely ill patients at the University Hospital Eppendorf (UKE) in Hamburg, northern Germany on April 8, 2020, amidst the new coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. So, what are the drugs which were administered for Donald Trump’s infection?

Dexamethasone

This drug works by keeping the immune system in check. The thing with this drug is that it needs to be used at the appropriate time. If it is administered too early, it could impair the body’s ability to combat the virus. This is not a drug which should be used when symptoms are mild. During trials, it was concluded that this drug should be used at the point where people would require oxygen. The World Health Organization states that the steroid should be used in severe and critical cases.

Monoclonal antibody therapy

An interesting combination of antibodies concocted by the company Regeneron. This combination mimics the body’s own immune response. The way these antibodies work is by sticking to the coronavirus, preventing the virus from entering the body’s cells and making it more visible to the immune system. One of the controversial elements surrounding this treatment is that it was developed using the cells procured from an aborted foetus. This treatment is still being tested, however there is significant optimism that it will be effective.

Remdesivir

This is an antiviral drug which was developed to fight Ebola. It functions by preventing the virus from making copies of itself. This is due to the fact that it looks chemically similar to some of the raw materials that the virus requires to replicate. Initial trials show that this treatment reduces the duration of the symptoms, from fifteen to eleven days. With that said, there is no evidence that remdesivir has prevented deaths. The earlier this treatment is administered during the infection phase, the better.

Together with these treatments, Donald Trump was also given zinc, Vitamin D, famotidine, melatonin and aspirin.

Should you be unfortunate enough to get infected with COVID-19, would you feel confident with these treatments? Let us know in the comments section below.
