Why are all the Italians coming to Malta?

There was a time where Italy was the envy of most countries in Europe and also the entire world. A centre of excellence boasting sophisticated culture, marvellous architecture and exceptional food, Italy was indeed the place to experience and live in. Fast forward a few years later and Italy is a shell of its former self, with most Italians migrating to different countries in hope of a better future. One of the popular destinations for such Italians seeking a new beginning is Malta. In this article, we discuss some of the reasons why Malta is a popular destination for Italians.

Familiarity
There is this perception that due to our Mediterranean influence and proximity, the Maltese and Italians are very similar. Although there are similarities, the Maltese are a different nation, having a different culture and way of life. Don’t get me wrong, we love having you over! Just keep in mind that we are not the same.

Proximity
Malta and Italy are practically geographical neighbours and any Italian coming to live here is really not far away from his roots. Being close to home has its benefits and Malta does provide this convenience to Italians wishing to start a new life here.
Economy
The Maltese and Italian economies are two worlds apart. The Italian economy has spiralled into a dreadful decline where many Italians could not find a proper job to sustain themselves and their families. On the other hand, just a few kilometres away, Malta has a thriving economy where many foreigners including Italians can come and find rewarding jobs with competitive salaries. One can immediately notice that this is happening in the catering industry where many Italian chefs work in various restaurants in Malta.

Safety
One of the reasons why many Italians come to Malta is due to the element of safety. Having the peace of mind that you can work and enjoy yourself in a country with low crime rates is indeed assuring.
Entertainment

Malta is also renowned for its places of entertainment. After a hard day’s work, there are plenty of places where one can unwind. Areas such as Sliema and St Julian’s are often frequented by foreigners. Who can blame them? Both localities are amazing and brimming with activity.
With that said, there are some struggles as well. Property prices are sky high and renting a place is no longer as easy as it used to be.
