Benefits of Almonds

Almonds are the seeds which come from the Prunus dulcis, more commonly known as the almond tree. Almonds are very nutritious as they are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and contain a fairly high amount of fat. The almond is so versatile, that it goes quite well with both savoury and sweet dishes. Chefs tend to include almonds with a stir fry dish, salads, pancakes, waffles and even cakes. In this article, we shall be discussing some of the health benefits of almonds.

Research shows that almonds have a number of health benefits, as they decrease the risk of heart disease, are beneficial for the eyes, treat certain skin conditions, such as eczema and also lower cholesterol levels.

Almonds contain a substantial amount of nutrients

Almonds contain an impressive amount of nutrients. They are a great source of fibre and protein, and contain important nutrients such as Vitamin E, selenium, zinc, calcium, magnesium and B vitamins. Studies show that the outer brown layer of the almond is a powerful source of antioxidants that help protect against oxidative stress, which may damage molecules in our cells, contribute to inflammation, ageing and cancer.

Almonds help prevent Type 2 Diabetes

Studies have shown that by 2035, the number of people suffering from type two diabetes will rise to six hundred million cases worldwide. Scientists have found that almonds are a good supplement to control blood sugar levels and also contain a remarkably high amount of magnesium.

Medical experts confirm that persons suffering from type two diabetes normally experience a deficiency in magnesium. Almonds help regulate this deficiency. They also help to lower sugar levels in your blood.

Almonds are beneficial for eye health

Almonds are complementary towards the proper functioning of the eyes. Research shows that since almonds are rich in vitamin E, they protect our eyes against the bad chemicals and toxins in the atmosphere. Furthermore, consuming regular amounts in your day to day meals, will help prevent abnormal changes to your eye lens and also combats the development of cataracts.

Almonds lower cholesterol levels

Cholesterol is a contributing factor to heart disease. Studies have shown that incorporating almonds in your diet can lower the number of cholesterol levels by three to twenty-five per cent and reduce the LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol) by four to thirty-five per cent and raise HDL cholesterol (known as the good cholesterol).
