How WordPress Took Over

WordPress is today a natural choice if you want to build a website. This platform now powers over thirty percent of the internet, which is no easy feat. In this article, we look a bit at the history of WordPress and how it became one of the leading website back-end tools in the world.

WordPress is an open source community and is made up of dedicated developers and users. WordPress was first initiated following the discontinued b2/cafelog. In 2003, two users of this software, Matt and Mike, decided to build a new platform. Most probably, they would never have imagined the impact that they would make on the industry where they went on to create thousands of jobs for web publishers, designers and writers, who make a living off it.

The first version of WordPress was released towards the end of May in 2003. It was based on the b2/cafelog software with some great improvements which were very well received by users. The software consisted of a new interface and templates.

As people were moving towards WordPress due to its exquisite user experience, many were dissatisfied with the latest updates on the blogging tool leader at the time called Moveable Type. Their new licensing terms pushed people away into looking for other alternatives.

Things went better for WordPress with the release of version 1.2 as users multiplied. As the product increased in popularity, it started to get more help from the community.

December 2005 saw the release of version 2.0 which boasted a new administrator dashboard. With this new update, users did not need to load a page to perform simple tasks. In 2010, the ownership of the WordPress trademark and logo was passed on to the WordPress foundation. This was a key moment as it ensured that the platform will continue to grow and its development does not depend on a company. In this very same year, version 3.0 was released. By 2013, it became the most popular content management system in the world.

2018 was the year that WordPress brought about a new editing experience. This new block was codenamed as Gutenberg.

As it progresses, WordPress is constantly evolving to anticipate and address the needs of millions of publishers around the world. Thanks to this platform, people have been empowered to create compelling webpages across the years. Are you willing to use WordPress for a new website?
