At some point in time, we have all experienced a wild night out where drinking loads of alcohol is the natural course of business. Before you know it the next morning you find yourself in bed with a headache and stomach discomfort, where the resolute of getting out of bed vanishes completely.
There is no particular cure to treat a hangover. In this article, however, we shall be discussing a few tips which could make you feel better when having a hangover.
Drinking plenty of water is one of the best solutions to get rid of the bad toxins in your body. Alcohol tends to dehydrate your body. Excess alcohol decreases the body’s production of the anti-diuretic hormone, which is used by the body to reabsorb water. When drinking alcohol, the body loses more fluid than it should due to increased urination and/or vomiting and therefore the anti-diuretic hormone available decreases and further dehydration is the end-result.
As a rule of thumb, when consuming alcohol, it is best that you alternate between a glass of water and an alcoholic beverage.
Studies have shown that certain food and drink have the ability to alleviate hangover symptoms. Foods rich in potassium such as bananas and kiwis help replenish the body and cure a hangover. Watermelon is also beneficial when you are suffering from a hangover as this helps to rehydrate the body due to its high water content.
Studies have shown that honey improves hangover symptoms due to its high fructose content. Fructose has the ability to eliminate up to 32.4% of the alcohol content from one’s body.
Extensive research shows that ginger is another effective remedy to cure a hangover. This is due to the fact that this has the ability to sooth a bad stomach and get rid of nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.
Take a Bath
Once you get enough sleep, take a fifteen to twenty-minute bath. Soaking in your hot tub will help you relax and stimulate your blood circulation. The heat will help flush out the toxins from your body.
As uncomfortable as it sounds, taking a cold shower is also beneficial for hangover symptoms and has a number of health benefits. Taking a cold shower, especially after you soak in a warm hot tub, will increase your blood circulation and will boost your heart rate. This will help replenish the body and get rid of the alcohol toxins. A cold shower will also help you feel more alert, increase your tolerance to stress and help relieve depression.
Avoid caffeine as much as possible
Although studies show that caffeine is good to make you feel alert, try to avoid having too much coffee when you are hungover, as this causes dehydration and can make your headache feel worse. If you decide to down a cup of coffee when you are hungover, make sure to drink water right after.
